The transportation charge (also called the base freight charge or linehaul charge) is the core cost of moving a shipment from origin to destination — the fundamental fee for transport service before any surcharges or accessorials are added. For parcel carriers, the transportation charge is determined by shipping zone, package weight (actual or dimensional, whichever is higher), and service level. It is the starting point to which fuel surcharges, residential surcharges, and other accessorials are then applied.
Transportation Charge Components
For parcel shipping, the transportation charge is typically calculated from a rate table based on: service type (Ground, 2-Day, Overnight), shipping zone (1–8, determined by origin and destination ZIP codes), and billable weight. Published rates increase significantly from Zone 2 (nearby) to Zone 8 (cross-country). Negotiated discounts in carrier contracts are typically expressed as a percentage discount off the published transportation charge.
Transportation Charge vs. Total Shipping Cost
The transportation charge is not the total cost of a shipment. Total shipping cost = Transportation Charge + Fuel Surcharge + Residential/DAS/other applicable accessorials + any special service fees. For residential shipments, the total cost can exceed the transportation charge by 40–60%+ once fuel surcharge and residential/DAS accessorials are included. Quoting only the transportation charge — and ignoring surcharges — significantly understates true per-shipment cost.
