UPS SurePost is a UPS shipping service that uses UPS to transport a package from the origin through its ground network, then hands it off to the United States Postal Service (USPS) for final delivery to the recipient’s mailbox or door. SurePost combines UPS’s nationwide pickup and sortation network with USPS’s last-mile coverage — resulting in lower per-package cost than UPS Ground, particularly for lightweight residential packages, in exchange for longer transit times.
How SurePost Works
- The shipper tenders packages to UPS using SurePost service.
- UPS transports packages through its normal ground sortation network.
- Near the destination, UPS injects the packages into the USPS system at a Destination Delivery Unit (DDU).
- USPS delivers the package in the recipient’s regular mail delivery.
SurePost vs. UPS Ground
SurePost is typically 10–20% cheaper than UPS Ground for residential packages under 10 lbs, with transit times 1–3 days longer. It is best suited for non-time-sensitive, low-value residential shipments where delivery speed is secondary to cost. SurePost performance can vary by destination — delivery to PO Boxes and rural addresses where USPS has strong coverage tends to outperform carriers’ own residential routes in cost.
